A summary of the Build Back Smarter project which looked at how home performance upgrades could and should be undertaken at the same time as earthquake repairs. Case studies were used to test the approach and ease of upgrading homes during earthquake repair.
Although the project aimed to upgrade ten homes, the slowness of the repair process in Christchurch meant that only six homes were upgraded as part of the Build Back Smarter pilot.
