When we developed the medium density assessment tools, carbon reduction was barely on the agenda. Now, it’s front of mind and we’re delighted to be able to extend the assessment tools to include carbon with the assistance of the Building Research Levy.
The tools were developed as a way to assess and guide good practice in medium density housing in New Zealand. The tools assess core areas of: Character, context and identity; Choice; Connectivity; Liveability; and Sustainability. They are a good guide for developers on what works and what can be improved on a site.
A new project, starting in 2022, will add an integrated assessment of greenhouse gas emissions to the existing tools. The revised tools will be tested in three case study developments, and will include identifying design elements, installed equipment and behaviours that affect the amount of energy used for heating, cooling, hot water, lighting, and appliances.
We’re looking forward to seeing how this project develops over the year. If you’re interested in being involved, please contact glendal@beaconpathway.co.nz
