Back to New Homes

Verney Ryan

Verney Ryan

Verney comes from a planning background which stands him in good stead when navigating the contribution planning rules and regulations have in encouraging (or discouraging) sustainable homes.  Verney spent 10 years in the United Kingdom, focusing on green building technology, energy efficiency and renewable energy, and carbon reduction programmes.  Verney has been with Beacon since 2007 and he’s led everything from large, new home, demonstration projects to energy research to retrofit assessments.  At the moment, Verney is developing assessment tools for medium density, building on the 2015 tour of ‘medium density done well’ in the US and Canada. Verney is multi-talented; he’s a gifted facilitator and a great presenter, and not least of all, the best dressed of the Beacon team!

Glenda Lock

Glenda has extensive experience in the local government sector, particularly with project management and policy development.  She worked for Waitakere City Council for 17 years in various strategy and long term planning roles.  Glenda’s project management skills have been well used in Beacon since 2011 and she is involved broadly over our projects ensuring delivery to time and on spec.  Glenda has been Beacon’s representative in the co-design review of the Auckland Wide Healthy Housing Initiative (AWHI) from which she’s gained considerable insight into housing issues ‘on the ground’.  She is the expert in Beacon’s neighbourhood tools, having applied them most recently in Hobsonville, and in surveying techniques.  Glenda is also indispensable as the person who can get the best out of the coffee machine!

Vicki Cowan, Knowledge Manager

Vicki Cowan

Vicki has been part of Beacon since 2006.  She originally ran Beacon’s government research contract as Knowledge Manager, and then went on to manage Beacon’s projects and research when we became Beacon Pathway Incorporated.  Vicki’s project and financial management skills were behind the successful delivery (in full, on time, in spec)  of both the FRST research programme and projects such as Build Back Smarter.  Since 2015 Vicki has been seconded to the Home Performance Advisor programme, helping to grow this partnership initiative, and she is taking up managing the Home Performance Education in Schools project.  Having retrofitted her own home fully with insulation and double glazing, she is passionate about getting New Zealanders moving toward better home performance.

 Bill Smith

Bill Smith

Bill has come on board as part of the team working on medium density assessment tools.  Bill is a specialist in sustainable behaviour change, neighbourhood design and community resilience.  He recently applied behaviour change methodologies to encourage homeowners to improve housing quality and energy efficiency, an area which is often unaddressed in the home performance equation.  Bill has worked with Beacon’s Neighbourhood Sustainability assessment tools in Hobsonville, and is bringing his knowledge of neighbourhood design to the medium density project.

Communications Liaison - Andrea Blackmore

Andrea provides communications support for Beacon projects and coordinates media activities.  She works across the projects to disseminate Beacon’s research to end-users (industry organisations, government and consumers), including publishing Beacon’s newsletter and maintaining the website.  Andrea has been around since 2005 and knows where all the skeletons lie!
