About Us

What we do

We produce robust information and research

Beacon undertakes new research to fill the gaps in understanding house and neighbourhood performance.  We pull together knowledge from our own research and other work around New Zealand and the world into a form that means it can be used to drive change.

Team meeting New Category of HomeWe collaborate on projects, working together to achieve change in the sector and contributing our knowledge and expertise

One of Beacon’s greatest resources is our extensive network across the housing sector, from central and local government, to industry,   affordable and third sector housing providers, design and construction.   This resource enables us to draw together partners around an opportunity or project, leverage funding and other contributions, and link up opportunities and people.

We believe that research has to be tested in the real world.    Demonstration projects provide a proof of concept that gives weight and credibility to results. Beacon has extensive experience in scoping and running collaborative projects, both demonstration and for clients, and we believe evaluation and monitoring is an integral part of this.

We offer our expertise in projects that fit with our vision and goals

Beacon’s team has extensive experience in the performance of homes and neighbourhoods.  We can offer technical insight, analysis and expertise to your projects.

Housing Matters tour group

We use events / publications / experiential learning to share knowledge and achieve our goals

Our work varies from communicating our own research through workshops, symposia, blogs and newsletters, to running study tours in and outside New Zealand.

We hold regular Housing Matters events in Christchurch and extending to Auckland.

As well as holding our own events, we support and collaborate with other like minded organisations.  In 2018 we organised the annual conference for the Eco Design Advisors.

We develop and share robust independent tools

We recognise that knowledge needs to come in a form which can be applied in the real world. Beacon has a number of tools and resources in a useful form for end-users.  We can offer support in how to use them and will work with you to tweak the tools as you might need for your own project.

We share our knowledge through training and professional development.

Beacon can share our knowledge and expertise via training and professional development for your organisation in whatever format is most appropriate.

Beacon is a partner in the Home Performance Advisor programme which provides formal training and industry-recognised certification for those providing advice on performance, resource efficiency and general improvement of homes.

We also offer our expertise to train communities - we worked with the Kootuitui Ki Papakura Trust to develop a training tailored for whanau.  Teaching whanau empowered them to spread their home performance knowledge in their own community.
